Happy Happy Joy Joy
It another big race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. Somewhere on the order of 400,000 rabid NASCAR fans will descend on the area, backing up traffic and getting in the way of local residents. Every Friday before a race weekend I end up stuck in a traffic jam on 377 at 1171.
Argh.
It’s too bad I can’t have those front-mounted rocket launchers I’ve always wanted for my Avalanche….
I pity you. I really do. I’ve been stuck in traffic there before, but it was because of the Rolling Stones concert a few years ago. It wasn’t fun for anyone, especially when you had a group of teenage girls in the car. Trapped. For hours. With a two hour drive home on top of that. Misery.
Ack. I remember when they had a huge concert (400,000 people) out there on a weekend and traffic was backed up on 114 all the way back to the airport (which is 10 miles or so). The local TV managed to get video of the teenagers “relieving themselves” on the side of the road when the wait became unbearable. There were lots of complaints from residents along 114 and they haven’t done anything that big since.
The bright side to NASCAR is that a portion of the people come early and camp out and the other larger portion comes on Saturday morning, when I can find alternate routes to avoid them.
I went to a Craftsman truck series race out there once (held on a Friday night), and getting out took quite a bit of time. It was kind of like a low-speed block party (most of the fans were drunk by then). Fortunately, I knew about 156 and was able to get around some of it once we got off the speedway grounds.
