Moving Towards Ownership

I met the inspector this afternoon and followed him through most of the inspection.  He found a few things that I’ll want the seller to correct, but none of it was major.  The structure is sound and all of the systems work.

So here’s a view from the street of the house.

Now I’ve just got to work out the financing.  I’ve been approved, but I have to send in a bunch of documentation.  But the financer sent the packet to the house, rather than to my current address.  It was just by luck that it arrived today just before I arrived and I was able to pick it up.  I’m not sure where the mistake occurred, but hopefully we’ll get it straightened out.

  1. Very nice!  Now, is there space for a range out in back?

    Good luck!

  2. I’m afraid that all I could get away with in the back yard would be a pellet-gun range.  It’ll probably be when I retire when I’ll be able to have a house with enough land for my own range.

    What Aubrey said.

My goal is to be able to shoot from the back porch without some fuckwit calling out the National Guard on me.

On the topic of a personal range, I have a cabin in northern WI on 4 acres that backs up to a county forest.  I have been teaching my kids to shoot in back of the cabin.  The guy that rents the cabin next door (200 yards away) came over and in a not so nice way demanded that we stop shooting.  I called the county sherrif’s office and the WI DNR who both said the same thing “that’s probably why you bought the place so you could shoot on your own land.”  What do you all suggest I say to the dickweed next door?

  6. From what you’re saying, it sounds like there are no laws or ordinances against shooting on that forest.  If that’s true, then you aren’t doing anything illegal, so I’d tell the guy to stuff it.  If he wasn’t prepared to hear gunfire from time to time, he shouldn’t be living in the country.

Actually, Aubrey we do the shooting on my land.  If the guy would have been halfway civil I would be more understanding, I just don’t like him telling me what I can and can’t do on my land.  I’m wrestling with whether I want to commence an openly hostile relationship with a neighbor or what.

  8. I see.  I saw the bit about the forest and thought you were shooting there.  As long as you stay on your land, and you aren’t endangering your neighbor, there isn’t much he can do about it.  But I understand about not wanting to be hostile with your neighbor.

I’d probably politely tell him that since I owned the land that I could shoot on it as often as I wanted and that no laws are being broken and his safety isn’t being harmed.  Further, I’d explain to him that shooting is a common occurance in rural areas and that he should expect to hear gunfire from time to time.  At this point, it’s up to him to decide how to respond.  Unfortunately, it sounds like he’s already decided to be hostile.

Yup, you’re right.  The reason I mentioned the county forest was just to point out that I wasn’t shooting through my 4 acres into a subdivision or something.  We’re talking big woods.  I told the guy I thought it was legal for me to shoot there, and he said it wasn’t.  I replied that I wouldn’t shoot until I verified legality which I since have done and that’s where it is now.  I’m trying to design a conversation like you mentioned to take place before I resume shooting.

  10. In Vermont, very few towns have ordinances against shooting on your own property or on town property.  Indeed, our town cop (we only have one) maintains a shooting range for all to use on town property right next to his house!

And usually he’ll stop by and join you!

(And folks want to know why I live here…)

News Flash!  And I cannot believe this.  My neighbor who ordered me to stop shooting was shooting a high power out behind his place last weekend and my other neighbor on the other side who knew of the dispute called the county sherrifs office and made a noise complaint!  My worrying about what to do is over.  I will announce my next arrival with a barrage.

  12. It sounds like your neighbor is one of those “for me, but not for thee” types.  I hope he learns his lesson about calling the cops on you (it sounds like the other neighbor is on your side).

Yup, the other neighbor is employed by my cousin.  He likes to shoot too and was just as sideways as me about this other dickweed.
