You’re Kidding, Right?
Sometimes I have to wonder about the various executives and managers I work with. I think perhaps they’ve been drinking a little too much management water.
Today I was asked to figure out how much we need to include in next year’s budget to handle ad-hoc sizing requests. So let me see… they want me to compute a number that represents the overall size for a set of tasks where a) the number of tasks is unknown and b) the scope of each task is unknown. My inner smartass was tempted to respond with something like this:
It would be an accurate, but perhaps somewhat obtuse, answer. However, discretion won the day and I simply tried to explain why such a thing was an impossible task. Unfortunately, they remain undeterred and have decided to “take a guess.”
Hey, man…you were mentioning pics stolen by MyColostomybag, so I thought I’d drop you a note to say that browsing from here in my hotel in San Antone, and at home, and thru Bloglines – I get the picture of the cute doggie, too. I’d expect it under Bloglines, but not browsing directly.
My rewrite rules check the referrer. If it’s not blank and it’s not from (www).aubreyturner.org, then the client gets the doggie picture.
However, I’ve learned that the browser’s caching can sometimes bite you. I was just fiddling around with an external hotlink checker site, which advised me to clear the cache. Once I did, the image changed to the one of Boots. Then, when I went back to Expression Engine’s control panel to look at this post, it was still using the doggie picture. I had to clear the cache again to get the right image.
Looking at the logs (using the IP from this comment), I see you hitting the site with a bloglines referrer and getting a 302 for that file, which caused your browser to load “BandwidthTheft.jpe” (the picture of Boots) in place of “smartass2.jpg.” Then, I see you hit the post directly with your browser. However, the browser never requests the image file again.
If you clear your cache it should show up correctly.
I also added Bloglines to my set of allowed referrers. The next time you get a chance, let me know if the images appear when using it.
I’m not too surprised about the browser behaviour. I’ll keep an eye peeled, then.
By the way, viz this: “how much we need to include in next year’s budget”…the correct answer is “Lots”. Take last years number, double it, and then be thrilled when you get 1.5 of it.
Of course, you then have the responsiblity of spending every last dime of it.
